The Palghar police has started an investigation after a former Mumbai Under 16 football player allegedly died by suicide in Palghar recently, following which an accidental death case was registered.

According to Palghar SP Yatish Deshmukh, the player, Sagar Sorti, 33, was missing since November 16 after he left home early morning, telling his family that he was going to Pune to play football. However, when he did not respond for two days, the family started looking for him. On November 18, villagers alerted Kasa police about his body, nearly 150 kilometres from his residence.

Family members told police that Sorti had been depressed for two years and had cut off contact with friends. He was not even participating in the preparation for his brother’s wedding that was to take place within two weeks.
“No suicide note was found. On November 16, he spoke to several people and we will contact them. His phone was found,” Deshmukh said.

The report of postmortem at JJ Hospital mentioned hanging as cause of death.
An officer said, “He called up several people that day and their statements should give clarity. We are also checking if he was on any medication for his mental health condition. An officer of sub-inspector rank has been asked to investigate the Accidental Death Report.”
