The Maharashtra Police will begin its recruitment drive to fill 17,471 constabulary posts across the state from Wednesday. The police have received 17.76 lakh applications for the posts of constables, drivers, band men, SRPF personnel and jail staff.

This would be one of the rare occasions when physical examinations, which include short and long distance running and shot put, would be conducted during the monsoon season. This has come in for criticism from political parties which have demanded that the recruitment process be delayed further as it could cause injury to players.

An officer from Maharashtra police said that for 9,595 constable posts, they received 8,22,984 applications, while for 1,686 constable driver posts, 1,98,300 applications have been received. For 1,800 prison constable posts, 3,72,354 applications have been received. “We have received 101 applications for each post, while it is 206 per post in the prison department,” the officer said.

The Maharashtra police has more vacancies than usual as recruitment could not be done during 2019, 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic while retirements continued as its usual pace.

In addition to this, several policemen lost their lives due to which there was a higher backlog which had to be filled last year and this year.

A senior official said, “Usually, the recruitment takes place during the summer. This time around, on account of Lok Sabha elections, the Model Code of Conduct came into place in March. Since the state machinery including the police was occupied with this, the recruitment had to be delayed.”

Nilish Lanke, the recently elected MP from NCP (SP), criticised the recruitment being carried out during the monsoon as it could injure the participants. He further said that the participants also would not have space to practise due to rain and hence the recruitment should be delayed further.

A senior officer, however, said that within a few months, the Model Code of Conduct would come in place again for the state elections and hence there was no option of delaying the recruitment further.
