Shiv Sena (UBT) chief spokesperson Sanjay Raut has demanded the resignation of Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in the wake of the train accident in Odisha’s Balasore on Friday evening which led to the death of at least 288 people due to “carelessness”.

The Sena MP said Vaishnaw should learn from former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri who had resigned immediately after a train accident. Over 1,100 people were also injured in the worst train tragedy in the country in two decades as the Chennai-bound Coromandel Express, the SMVT Bengaluru-Howrah Express and a goods train collided near Bahanaga Bazar station.

Raut also hit out at the minister, saying that it was carelessness that led to the accident. “Three trains collided with each other on the tracks. This is the result of carelessness on the part of Vaishnaw who is from Odisha himself. I think he should immediately tender his resignation from the post on moral grounds,” said Raut who was in Nashik on Saturday.

“Lal Bahadur Shastri had resigned as minister immediately after a train accident. In a similar manner he (Vaishnaw) should also tender his resignation,” Raut added.
