NIRF 2024: Five institutions from Mumbai make it to top 10

Five educational institutions from Mumbai have emerged among top 10 under various categories in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024 that were announced on Monday. The institutions are Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Mumbai, Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Homi Bhabha National Institute, and SVKM’s Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS).

IIT Bombay has secured third place in the overall category, third place in engineering, tenth in management, fourth in research and first in innovation. Last year, it was ranked fourth overall, third in engineering, tenth in management, fourth in research, and seventh in innovation.

According to IIT Bombay director Shireesh Kedare, “The students, faculty and support staff are the pillars of our institute. Their dedication and hard work have propelled us to this achievement. I congratulate everyone at IIT Bombay and look forward to further improvements in all areas.”

IIM Mumbai, formerly known as the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), is ranked sixth in the management category for NIRF 2024, up from seventh last year. Director of the institute professor Manoj Tiwari said, “Our team has made significant improvements in industry connections, research, and professional practices. The IIM designation has positively impacted our perception.”

The Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) has maintained its fifth rank under pharmacy category for NIRF 2024, down from fourth last year.

NMIMS’s Shobhaben Pratapbhai Patel School of Pharmacy & Technology Management (SPPSPTM) is ranked tenth among pharmacy institutes in NIRF 2024. In 2018, the institute was at ninth place but had since fallen out of the top 10. Dr Jagannath Sahoo, Dean of SPPSPTM, said, “This ranking reflects our commitment to excellence, driven by our focus on cutting-edge research, industry-aligned curriculum, and strong placement record.”

The Homi Bhabha National Institute, Mumbai, has made a significant leap to sixth place in the Research category for NIRF 2024, up from 15th last year. In contrast, the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) from Mumbai, which was 10th in research last year, has dropped to 12th place this year.

In the universities category, Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in Mumbai has significantly improved its rank, moving from 98th in 2023 to 58th this year. However, the institute remains at 98th in the overall category.

The Mumbai University has fallen from 56th place in 2023 to 61st in 2024 in the Universities category and has dropped out of the top 100 overall institutions, compared to its 96th place last year.
