NCP (SP) wants MVA’s ‘united fight’ against BJP for BMC polls

The Mumbai Congress, which wants to contest the BMC elections without Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) and Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), had proposed to fight the polls with its old ally NCP(SP).

Days after Mumbai Congress announced that it will contest the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls independently, its Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) ally Nationalist Congress Party (SP) on Saturday said the election should be fought unitedly against the BJP.

Mumbai Congress chief and Lok Sabha MP Varsha Gaikwad, along with a delegation of party leaders, met NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar two days ago. The Mumbai Congress, which wants to contest the BMC elections without Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) and Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), had proposed to fight the polls with its old ally NCP(SP). Pawar had told the delegation that he will consult his Mumbai leadership and convey a decision.

On Saturday, the NCP-SP leaders held a meeting on upcoming BMC polls. “The workers and leaders have conveyed that the election should be fought as an MVA and with all our other allies against the BJP. It is important that all natural allies should remain united,” said NCP-SP MLA Jitendra Awhad after the meeting.

When asked about Congress’ reluctance to fight the election alongside MNS, Awhad said the MNS has not yet given the proposal for alliance and therefore, it was not even discussed. “Our position from ‘Delhi to galli’ is identical (to defeat the BJP). For this, the workers feel that the election should be fought unitedly. We have conveyed that to Pawar saheb,” said Awhad.

According to sources, the NCP-SP is likely to contest the elections in alliance with the Shiv Sena-UBT as the Congress has already conveyed to fight the polls independently.

Last week, Maharashtra Congress in-charge Ramesh Chennithala at a party program announced, “The local unit of Mumbai wants to contest this civic poll independently. We have given them the permission to do so. We did compromise during Lok Sabha and Maharashtra assembly elections. Now, the office-bearers feel that the election should be fought on our own strength. There’s nothing wrong in it.”

Commenting on the NCP-SP meeting, Mumbai Congress’ chief spokesperson Sachin Sawant said every party has a right to decide its strategy of contesting polls. “We have conveyed our decision. We don’t want to comment on any other party’s strategy regarding fighting the election,” he said.
