The Mumbai police on August 4 arrested a woman for allegedly stealing ornaments worth Rs 10 lakh from her own house. The police said she made it appear like the ornaments had been stolen before it came to light that she herself had stolen the jewellery as she was planning to elope with her lover.

The accused, Urmila Ramesh, also allegedly kept some of the jewellery with her daughter’s boyfriend.

Mahendra Shinde, Senior Inspector of the Dindoshi police station, said an FIR was registered at the Dindoshi police station on August 28 after the woman and her husband approached them. The woman claimed that jewellery worth Rs 10 lakh was missing from their Goregaon house.

The police registered an FIR and began investigating the matter. The police did not find any signs of forced entry into their house and suspected someone from the house. An officer said Urmila also hinted towards the involvement of her husband, a civic employee.

The police, however, checked their call data records and found that the woman spoke frequently to another man, and she was having an affair with him. Further probe revealed that she had been planning to elope with the man.

The police found she also frequently spoke to another younger man who turned out to be her daughter’s boyfriend. The police brought him in for questioning, and he allegedly revealed that Urmila herself had stolen the ornaments and kept some of the stolen jewellery with him.

The police said they brought Urmila in for questioning, and on sustained interrogation, she confessed that she had planned to elope with her boyfriend.
