Mumbai News Live Updates: Car runs over 18-month-old boy sleeping with mother on pavement in Mumbai’s Wadala
An 18-month-old boy sleeping on the pavement along with his mother died after he was allegedly run over by a four-wheeler in the Wadala area on Saturday night, following which the driver was arrested and and FIR was filed.
According to police, the incident took place around 11.30pm Saturday, when 29-year-old Priya Londhe was sleeping with her son Wardhan on a pavement near Ambedkar College on Balaram Khedekar Marg in Wadala, when they were run over by a white car. Her husband Nikhil had gone to get food for the family.
People stopped the vehicle and called up the police. RAK Marg Police arrived at the scene and arrested the driver, Kamal Vijay Riya (46), a resident of Wadala Bhavya Heights. Read full report here

Mumbai News Live Updates: Sanjay Raut seeks explanation on Shinde Sena's Gorhe's remarks targeting his party
Sanjay Raut sought explanation from the organisers of the 98th Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan in Delhi regarding remarks made by Shiv Sena’s Neelam Gorhe targeting the Shiv Sena UBT. Gorhe, who is the deputy chairperson of Maharashtra Legislative Council, had claimed that posts in Shiv Sena UBT were attained through monetary means, including gifts like Mercedes cars, news agency PTI reported. Raut wrote to Sahitya Sammelan chairperson Usha Tambe, claiming that it appeared that the event was “held under political pressure”. While stating that the platform was “grossly misused”, Raut said that if the programmes were not organised with proper approval from the Sahitya Mandal, an apology should be issued for hosting these events.

Dawn of hope: Bank of Maharashtra slashes interest rate on retail loan by 25 bps
State-owned Bank of Maharashtra (BoM) has cut interest rate by 25 basis points on retail loans, including home and car loans in line with reduction in repo rate by RBI.
After a gap of 5 years, RBI reduced the repo rate, the rate at which banks borrow from the central bank, by 25 basis points to 6.25 per cent on February 7.
Following this, the benchmark rate for home loan has been reduced to 8.10 per cent, one of the lowest in the banking industry, BoM said in a statement on Sunday.
At the same time, it said, car loan came down to 8.45 per cent per annum.
Similarly, education and other loans linked with Repo Linked Lending Rate (RLLR) has also been reduced by 25 basis points. --PTI

Maharashtra Forest Minister and BJP leader Ganesh Naik will on Monday hold a 'janata darbar' in Thane, a stronghold of Deputy Chief Minister and Shiv Sena president Eknath Shinde.
Naik, guardian minister for neighbouring Palghar district, last month said he would be holding public grievance meetings in Thane too, triggering speculation that the BJP was preparing to challenge the dominance of ally Shinde's party in the area.
Notably, the BJP leader had initiated the 'janata darbar' (public hearing) concept in the state in 1990s, connecting people with the administration to address grievances. --PTI

Maharashtra Mumbai News Live Updates: Marathi-medium schools on the decline
Despite the state government aggressively promoting Marathi, including making it compulsory in government and semi-government offices, the number of Marathi-medium schools in Mumbai has been on the decline: it has declined from 368 to 262 in 10 years.
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation education officer Rajesh Kankal attributed the decline to changing parental preferences. “Most parents prioritize English-medium education. Those who don’t get admission there opt for Marathi medium as a second choice,” he said.
