Mumbai: Jeweller robbed of ornaments worth 1.91 cr at gunpoint

Two unidentified person stole gold and silver ornaments worth Rs 1.91 crore from a jewellery store in Agripada after holding the owner and a employee at a gunpoint, police said Monday.

Mumbai police said they registered a case in connection with the incident which happened on Sunday.

The case was lodged based on a complaint filed by Bhavarlal Jain, who owns Rishabh Jewellers located near Saat Rasta.

As per the complaint, the jewellery owner and his employee were at the store around 3.30 pm when the two unidentified men reached there.

An officer said, “The two individuals entered the shop under the pretext of buying some ornaments. Initially, they inquired with the two, after which they drew weapons and threatened to harm them.”

One of the two accused was carrying a country-made pistol, while the other had a knife with him.

“They escaped with ornaments weighing 2,458 grams, worth Rs 1.91 crore,” an officer said.

The police said that after the robbers fled the scene, a customer who came to the shop found Jain and his employee tied up.

The jeweller reported the matter to the Agripada police station, where a case was registered under sections of robbery and house trespassing of the Indian Penal Code, as well as the Arms Act.

“We suspect that the robbers had gathered detailed information about the store and its employees, which allowed them to choose an exact time to commit the robbery. We are also looking into the possibility that the suspects may have had prior knowledge from someone who had worked at the store or was involved in its operations,” an investigator said.

The crime branch is conducting a parallel investigation in the case.
