The Dahi Handi festivities in Mumbai this year witnessed a significant reduction in the number of participants who sustained injuries as they headed to break the yoghurt-filled clay pots. Compared to the previous year’s count of 222, this time only 107 ‘Govindas’ were injured despite heavy rainfall, according to the data from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
The decrease in injuries indicated the improved safety protocols taken this year, said officials.
As per the data, among those injured,14 are currently admitted to hospitals, 62 were briefly hospitalised and discharged upon recovery, and 31 received outpatient treatment.
KEM Hospital tended to the highest number of Govindas with 31 cases, while Rajawadi reported 10 injuries, Sion had 7, Nair had three, Cooper six, JJ Hospital three, and GT Hospital two. The remaining injured persons received treatment from various other hospitals.
The Covid-19 pandemic led to the cancellation of the festival in 2020 and 2021. However, in 2022, after a two-year hiatus and with all restrictions lifted, the festival made a triumphant return, marked by exuberant celebrations.
In 2022, among the 222 Govindas who got injured during the handi-breaking festivities, three of them were hospitalised with life-threatening risks.
