Mumbai Covid-19 update: On Sunday too, Mumbai recorded 11 deaths, the same as on Saturday, which was the highest one-day fatality recorded since July 2021.

Mumbai recorded a further dip in the number of daily Covid-19 cases on Sunday, recording 7,895 cases as against the 10,661 infections it registered on Saturday. The daily positivity rate dipped to 13 per cent with 57,534 tests conducted. Officials said that the city is going through a peak and that dip in cases was expected on Sunday.

The number of deaths, however, remained high at 11 cases on Sunday. On Saturday too, Mumbai had registered as many deaths due to the Covid-19 infection.

In an interview with the Indian Express, Sandeep Juneja, Dean of School of Technology and Computer Science, at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), who has conducted Covid-19 data modelling projection, said, “We predict that the fatalities will peak in Mumbai by the end of January. As anticipated, fatalities are rising in the city.”

At present, the total active cases in Mumbai stand at 60,371. On Sunday, out of the new cases, 6,632 or 84 per cent were asymptomatic while 688 were hospitalised. Since January 11, there have been no active containment zones in slums and chawls even as 54 buildings have been sealed in the city. On Sunday, out of the 688 patients admitted, 92 required oxygen support.

Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Sunday amended the quarantine guidelines for passengers arriving in the city from the United Arab Emirates, including Dubai. As opposed to the earlier Standard Operation Procedure (SOP), passengers arriving in the city from the UAE are now exempted from the compulsory 7-day home quarantine and RT-PCR test on arrival, read the order issued by BMC on Sunday.
