Reservation Rage

The ongoing agitation for Maratha reservation in the state has caused distress for Maratha politicians across the political divide in the state, drawing criticism from their support base for not doing enough to ensure reservations for the Maratha community. Last week, Shiv Sena leader and cabinet minister Gulabrao Patil was abused by a Maratha protester during a telephone call for not standing up for the Maratha community. His counterpart across the political divide, Senior Congress leader Ashok Chavan was also heckled by youths from the Maratha community for his inability to secure reservations for the community. Many Maratha leaders are now cautious of picking up phone calls from unknown numbers, fearful that they would have to face a volley of questions from their supporters.

Sena Scepticism

Uddhav Thackeray’s attempt at rebuilding his faction of the Shiv Sena is causing discomfort among many of his supporters who stuck by him after the rebellion of Eknath Shinde. The latest leader to feel the pinch was five-time MLA and former cabinet minister Babanrao Gholap who decided to quit the party months before the Lok Sabha elections. Gholap who was eyeing the Shirdi Lok Sabha seat was put off after Thackeray decided to induct former Shirdi MP Bhausaheb Wakchaure into the party. Wakchaure had quit the Sena in 2014 to join the Congress and then subsequently joined the BJP in 2019.
