A 16-year-old girl was found dead early Saturday on a lawn of a high-rise building in Tardeo, where she lived with her family. The police are yet to conclude whether she fell out of her 23rd-floor home.
Priyanka Kothari, a Class X student at a top south Mumbai school, was found in a pool of blood on the ninth-floor lawn of Imperial Towers around 1.30 am. A security guard at the complex, which has twin towers with 61 floors each, found Priyanka and informed the police.
The police arrived on the scene and informed the Kotharis of the death. Priyanka is the daughter of Amrish Kothari, who runs jewellery brand Kothari Fine Jewels from a boutique on Altamount Road.
The body was handed over to her family after a postmortem examination was conducted.
An official at Tardeo police station said: “The deceased stayed in a duplex flat where each family member has their own bedrooms. She had reached home around 11.30 pm on Friday and a domestic help had opened the door.”
The police said that Kothari had then gone upstairs to her bedroom before descending to the flat’s common hall on the lower floor. “The balcony in the hall does not have a grill. We are investigating how she fell. No suicide note has been recovered,” said Sanjay Surve, Senior Inspector, Tardeo police.
The statements of the family members are yet to be recorded. “Other relatives at home were asleep at the time of the incident. We will not know whether there is anything suspicious about the death until we speak to the girl’s family and friends,” Surve said.
