Following an early onset of the Southwest Monsoon and above-normal showers this season, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Friday announced its withdrawal from Mumbai.
Even as the monsoon withdrawal was deferred beyond the normal date of retreat, this is the city’s earliest monsoon withdrawal in the past seven years and the second-earliest withdrawal in the nearly two decades since 2006.
Declaring the withdrawal of monsoon from the region, IMD said, “The Southwest Monsoon has further withdrawn from remaining parts of Gujarat; some parts of Maharashtra; most parts of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh and some parts of Bihar today on 10th October, 2025.”
While the typical date of monsoon withdrawal in Mumbai is October 8, it was delayed this year due to a western disturbance system, which brought light spells of rain to the city over the last weekend.
However, since Tuesday this week, rain has eluded Mumbai, with the city’s suburban and island city observatories recording 0 mm of rainfall.
Despite the delay, records show that this is Mumbai’s earliest monsoon withdrawal since 2018, when IMD had declared the retreat of the Southwest Monsoon in the city on October 6. Before that, in 2006, the monsoon withdrew on October 9.
For the past seven years, Mumbai has been experiencing delayed monsoon withdrawals. Last year, the southwest monsoon withdrawal in Mumbai was declared on October 15, whereas in 2023 and 2022, withdrawals were delayed by over two weeks, with the IMD announcing them on October 23.
In 2021, withdrawal took place by October 14, while in 2020, it was extended to October 28. In 2019, monsoon withdrawal was announced on October 14.
Responding to questions, officials maintained that delays in the withdrawal of monsoons are a typical phenomenon of the season, spurred by developing systems. IMD, for perspective, declares the withdrawal of the monsoon after observing factors such as spatial continuity, reductions in moisture as observed in imagery, changes in the wind regime, and the persistence of dry weather for at least five days.
The withdrawal announcement for Mumbai on Friday comes after the city experienced its earliest monsoon onset this year since 1950, with the IMD declaring the arrival on May 26.
Spanning the four monsoon months between June and September, the city received 3,100.4 mm of rainfall this season. In October, meanwhile, the city recorded 32 mm of rainfall in the suburbs, and over 72 mm at Colaba station.
