During the investigation into the June 4 killing of 32-year-old Saraswati Vaidya by her alleged live-in-partner Manoj Ramesh Sane, 56, on Mira Road, personnel from Navya Nagar police station did not expect to see what they saw in flat number 704 of J-wing in Geeta Aakashdeep Cooperative Housing Society.
The policemen along with the three witnesses, including neighbors and a broker in the society, broke open the door of the two-bedroom flat at around 7.30pm when they experienced a strong stench.
As per the FIR, the team first went to check two bedrooms and in one of them, they saw black plastic bags used to pack body parts. They also spotted an electric cutter with blood stains. As the foul smell was stronger from the kitchen, the team went there where they first found a ponytail with flowers on it before they spotted a pressure cooker and a vessel with boiled human flesh. Half-roasted flesh and bones were also found in the wash basin, two other buckets and tub, the FIR stated.
However, there were hardly any blood stains on the walls or kitchen platform, police said. In the suo motu FIR, sub-inspector Rahul Balasaheb Bhagtav is the complainant who has given a statement about the scene inside the flat.
A senior police officer said that Sane bought two cutters from nearby shops to chop the body. “We will make the shopkeepers our witnesses,” the officer said. Sane then allegedly dumped the body pieces in a nullah near the society. Police are in the process of retrieving them.
The 750-square-foot flat where the incident took place was rented by Sane on a monthly rent of Rs 8,000 and Rs 40,000 deposit. The owner of the flat is Sonam Builders, in which Bharat Jain is a partner. Jain’s employee was the one who informed the police about the stench from the flat and no one responded from inside.
The landlord claimed that they have made a proper rent agreement and have nothing to do with whatever the tenants are doing inside the room.
Before coming to Mira Road, Sane was living in a flat that was owned by his father at 702, Sane Residency, CHS Limited, Ram Mandir Road, Borivali (West). The property is undergoing redevelopment. Sane has cousins who stay in Borivali.
A forensic team also visited the flat on Thursday evening to collect evidence for forensic analysis. Police are also checking the CCTV installed in the society to check how many times Sane went out of the room between June 4 and 7, another officer said.
