With a view to provide hassle- free movement to passengers across the new terminal (T2) at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, the airport operator Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) has undertaken a slew of measures ahead of monsoons.
This will be the first monsoon for the new terminal building, which has been appreciated for its modern design but also criticised for being infested with mosquitoes.
For several weeks now, the grand white peacock inspired roof on the fourth level of the terminal building has been tested for rain water proofing during the day time, with water being sprayed on the roof through high pressure nozzles, especially to test the endurance of the skylights.
“Specific tests for gutter flushing, manholes, drain channels, departure bay expansion joints, skylights and underground pipes have been undertaken,” said a MIAL spokesperson.
A shed at the auto stand has also been provided to prevent passengers from getting drenched. Apart from using guppy fishes to prevent breeding of mosquitoes, the operator also claims to have cleaned a total of 40km of drains near the terminal with the help of the civic body.
“Five teams were set up to clean the drains over the last four months. MIAL along with the civic authority has cleaned and de-silted the drains on the city side in addition to a part of Mithi River falling under MIAL’s purview. Dedicated teams equipped with drain cleaning and suction machines have been allotted the responsibility of removal of any kind of clogging in the water outlet channels during monsoons,” said the spokesperson.
To check sudden flooding on high tide days, a total of seven portable pumps have been kept ready at the terminal. To assist passengers a round the clock Emergency Response Team has been set up to deal with any emergency situation during the monsoons, added the spokesperson.
