Man held for ‘obscene’ gesture to German national

The German national alerted others seated in the waiting room and GRP personnel who were patrolling nearby were informed.

Nirmal Nagar police have arrested a 50-year-old man after he was caught making obscene gestures at a German national in the waiting room of Bandra Terminus.

Police said the suspect, Shaukat Ali, hailed from Kerala and had been sent to judicial custody.

Police said the 24-year-old victim, a graphic designer from Berlin, had arrived in Mumbai on January 4 on a tourist visa. She had visited Pushkar, Hyderabad, Kashmir, Kanyakumari and Karnataka before reaching Mumbai. Police said the incident took place around 1.30 pm Saturday when the victim was seated in a waiting room on the first floor of Bandra Terminus with other passengers. She was to board the Aravali Express to Ajmer that was scheduled to depart later in the day.

“Ali, who was near the waiting room door, started making sounds to attract her attention. He made a lewd gestures to her,” said senior inspector Ashok Borse.

The German national alerted others seated in the waiting room and GRP personnel who were patrolling nearby were informed.

Ali reportedly told police that he did not have a job or home and lived on the streets. His wife, he told the police, died a few years ago. He does not have any known past criminal record. Police have requested the GRP for CCTV footage of the incident.
