Marking International Women’s Day, Maharashtra government on Friday unveiled the 4th Women Policy of the state after the delay of more than one and half years.
The policy focuses on eight principles which are Health, Nutrition and Wellbeing; education and skill; ending sexual and gender-based violence; gender responsive livelihood enhancement; gender inclusive infrastructure; gender responsive governance and political participation; gender sensitive natural resource management – Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Management and special sports policy for women and girls.
The first women’s policy of the state of Maharashtra was announced in 1994, the second in 2001 and the third in 2014. The 4th Women’s Policy was required, as ten years have passed since the announcement of the third Women’s Policy.
Marking the difference from the previous policies, an implementation plan has been prepared, benchmarks have been set to measure the progress of policy implementation and responsibilities of various departments have been defined.
Three-level committees have been formed to review the implementation of this policy which include a high power committee chaired by the Chief Minister, a state task force chaired by the Minister of Women and Child Development and district-level committee chaired by the Guardian Minister.
“The policy is aimed at an all-encompassing development policy for women and focuses on implementation of schemes that are meant to bring that. Maharashtra is known to be the first state to have brought women’s policy and this fourth policy focuses not only on social and economical development of women but also on eight principles which are essential to bring about equality in our society,” said Aditi Tatkare, state’s Women and Child Development minister.
