The Maharashtra transport department will prepare a detailed report over closing of 24 checkposts in the state following instructions from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

On Sunday, during the ground-breaking ceremony of Transport Bhavan, Fadnavis had said that closing these checkpoints will be crucial for the growth of trade and the smooth movement of goods. He also directed that a proposal regarding this be submitted by April 15.

Confirming the development, Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar said, “There are certain legal and financial matters that need to be addressed, but we are working through them. Once resolved, we will submit the report. However, for now, the checkposts will remain operational.”

Bal Malkit Singh, former president and advisor of the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), highlighted the advantages of closing state checkposts.

“It facilitates the seamless movement of goods and passengers, resulting in quicker transit and improved supply chain efficiency. Additionally, removing these checkposts helps eliminate corruption and bureaucratic delays,” he said.

Meanwhile, Bhimanwar said that the upcoming Transport Bhavan, which is expected to be completed within the next two-and-a-half years, will be equipped with the latest technology.

The state plans to incorporate Automated Vehicle Inspection Centers (ATS), Automated Driver Testing Centers (ADTT), and Integrated Traffic Management Systems (ITMS) to update drivers which will be monitored from the Bhavan.
