Justice Ramesh Dhanuka sworn in as Chief Justice of Bombay High Court, to serve for tenure of 3 days

Justice Dhanuka is due to demit office on May 30, upon attaining the age of 62, and will have a tenure as chief justice of three days, possibly the shortest.

Justice Ramesh Devkinandan Dhanuka was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court on Sunday.

Maharashtra Governor Ramesh Bais administered the oath of office to Justice Dhanuka at a brief swearing-in ceremony held at the Raj Bhavan. The ceremony began and concluded with the national anthem played by the police band, a Raj Bhavan statement said.

Additional Chief Secretary Manisha Mhaiskar Patankar read out the Warrant of Appointment of the Chief Justice issued by the President of India Smt Droupadi Murmu. The ceremony began and concluded with the National Anthem played by the Police Band.

Justice Dhanuka is due to demit office on May 30, upon attaining the age of 62, and will have a tenure as chief justice of three days, possibly the shortest.

Justice Dhanuka was born on May 31, 1961 and did his schooling and college in Mumbai. He secured first class and stood second in the third year law examination conducted by the University of Mumbai in 1985.

He started practice of law at Bombay High Court in 1985 in the chamber of Shri. Justice D. R. Dhanuka (Retd.), till his elevation as a judge of the Bombay High Court in 1990. He practiced on Appellate and Original Side of the High Court of Judicature at Bombay in Constitutional Law and other branches of Law and particularly Arbitration, Companies Act, Suits, Testamentary, Municipal Laws, Service Law, Rent Act.

Justice Dhanuka was on the Senior Counsel Panel of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai for the last several years and has appeared in a large number of matters representing municipal corporation in Bombay High Court. He joined as Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on January 23, 2012.

On Monday, a bench of Justice Dhanuka and Justice G S Kulkarni will take up matters pertaining to the vacation bench. While Justice Dhanuka will preside over a bench in the central courtroom in the HC building, the notified vacation bench led by Justice Manish Pitale will not sit on Monday.

On May 6, a bench led by Justice Dhanuka had directed the Maharashtra government to hand over two south Mumbai flats to their owner, a 93-year-old woman, putting an end to a property dispute that dragged on for eight decades.

On April 11, a Justice Dhanuka-led bench remarked that in India, matrimonial disputes constitute the most bitterly fought adversarial litigation with estranged couples treating their children as chattel or property.

On February 9, maintaining that the project is of “national importance”, a Justice Dhanuka-led bench had dismissed the plea filed by Godrej & Boyce Manufacturing Company Ltd, challenging the Maharashtra government’s acquisition of its land for a compensation of Rs 264 crore for the Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train project.

Meanwhile, Justice SV Gangapurwala was sworn-in as the Chief Justice of Madras High Court on Sunday.
