Priyanshu Kshatriya, who played the role of Babu Chhetri in the 2022 Bollywood film Jhund, was murdered Wednesday morning in Nagpur’s Jaripatka area, allegedly over old enmity. The police have registered a case of murder and detained his friend in connection with the incident.

Talking to The Indian Express, Arun Kshirsagar, Police Inspector, Jaripatka, said, “No arrests have been made so far. However, we have detained Kshatriya’s friend Dhruv Sahu, with whom he was last spotted on Tuesday night. We are trying to find out the intention behind this murder. An investigation is underway.”

According to the police, the murder allegedly took place around 2 am inside an abandoned house near the Nara area. Sources said Kshatriya’s throat was found to be slit with a sharp knife, and his face was allegedly disfigured with a rock.

Both men were allegedly inebriated at the time of the murder, police sources said, adding that local residents rushed him to the hospital, where doctors declared Kshatriya dead.

Upon receiving information in the morning, a team from Jaripatka police station rushed to the spot, following which the Crime Detection Branch detained Sahu within six hours. Sahu has a few prior cases registered against him.

According to the Nagpur police, Kshatriya had a record of minor criminal offences. He was arrested in 2022 for theft of jewellery and cash worth Rs 5 lakh. Recently, he had a financial dispute with Sahu. Although the two had clashed earlier, friends had intervened and settled the matter at the time.

The film Jhund, directed by Nagraj Manjule and starring Amitabh Bachchan, was based on the real-life story of Vijay Barse, who formed a football team with children from Nagpur’s slums and helped them find a new identity. The movie featured several local youths, including Kshatriya, who played the role of a football player named Babu Chhetri.
