Five days after three college students allegedly robbed a jewellery store in Ghatkopar, the police are on the lookout for the mastermind.
While two college students have been arrested, Chandrakiran Yadav, a Class XII dropout from a Ghatkopar-based college, who is suspected to have planned the robbery, has been missing with teams fanned out across Maharashtra, Bhopal and UP to track him down.
An officer said since the incident, Chandrakiran has switched off his phone and has not switched it on even once. “Our teams have visited his friends’ residences in Mumbai and nearby cities. We also have another team camping in Madhya Pradesh and some other states where he has relatives but so far, we have not been able to nab him,” the officer said.
During questioning of the two arrested 20-year-olds Tanish Bhaisade and Suraj Yadav, they said the trio had studied together in junior college and hence knew each other. While Chandrakiran had dropped out after HSC, the arrested accused were second-year students.
An officer said the arrested accused have so far not revealed much about why they decided to rob the store.
“The accused used a chopper and country revolver to carry out the robbery. Those arrested claimed Chandrakiran procured the weapons,” the officer added.
The incident had taken place on Wednesday when three armed men had entered Darshan jewellers in Ghatkopar (west) armed with a chopper and firearm. They threatened the shop owner at knifepoint and started taking jewellery.
However, while fleeing the owner tried to stop them and during the melee, the accused attacked the owner’s neck with the chopper. The owner sustained a cut in the neck but survived the attack. Two accused were arrested the next day by the police. The accused are currently in police custody.
