In a breakthrough in the murder of an elderly woman in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar three days ago, the police Friday arrested her relative, the wife of her stepson, who reportedly committed the crime in a fit of rage.

Based on CCTV footage and other clues, the police placed Mumtaz Irfan Khan, 52, under arrest for murdering Shehnaz Kazi, 65, who had been living alone at her Ghatkopar residence ever since her husband’s death in 2018. Shehnaz did not have any children, but her husband had a second wife and they together had been raising seven children, one of whom was Irfan Khan, husband of Mumtaz.

After Irfan Khan’s death, Mumtaz feared that she would not get a share in her property.

“Mumtaz had heard her husband’s siblings talk about getting share in the property of Shehnaz once she dies. Apart from the Ghatkopar flat where she lived, Shehnaz had two other properties,” Rakesh Ola, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone VII, said.

The officer said that Mumtaz had gone to meet Shehnaz on Tuesday and ask for money if not a share in the property. “She has told the police that when Shehnaz refused to give money, in a fit of rage, Mumtaz pushed her and she hit her head on the wall. Panicked, she then throttled Shehnaz with a rope lying there, took some money and fled,” another officer said.

The murder came to light when one of the neighbours went to check her residence after a call from Shehnaz’s siblings that she had not been answering the phone.

An officer said that the police suspected an insider’s involvement as Shehnaz was known to not take anyone she didn’t know into the house.

Going through CCTV cameras, the police found a woman in a burqa leaving the building in a suspicious manner. She then took an autorickshaw and kept changing the location of her destination. Eventually, she got off at a mall and took another autorickshaw home so that she was not tracked down.

“We traced the autorickshaw driver who said he dropped her at Kurla. We know that one of the siblings who was seeking property resided in Kurla and hence we decided to question her,” Ola said. He said that during the questioning the woman revealed her involvement.
