First case of pediatric death due to Swine flu

On Friday, the civic health department reported 60 new cases of H1N1 infection from various Mumbai hospitals.

A three-year-old boy succumbed to H1N1 virus infection on Thursday in Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital, becoming the first case of a pediatric death due to the infection. The boy, a Bhayander resident, was admitted in Children hospital in the city and later shifted to Andheri’s Kokilaben hospital on February 3 for treatment.

According to the civic officials, he died due to respiratory failure, acute respiratory distress syndrome and bilateral pneumonia due to H1N1 virus.

This is the first pediatric death due to the widespread air-borne infection in the city. So far 18 people, including the boy, have died due to H1N1 infection. On Friday, the civic health department reported 60 new cases of H1N1 infection from various city hospitals. Of these, 15 are children.

According to data gathered from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), of the 60 people who tested positive for the virus on Friday, 16 are admitted in hospital and 42 are undergoing treatment from home on out-patient department basis.
