The two men who fired shots outside Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s residence in Mumbai’s Bandra area early Sunday, took several precautions to evade the police, including disposal of phones and use of multiple travel modes. The Mumbai Police personnel, however, arrested them from inside a temple in Gujarat’s Bhuj on Monday with the help of human and technical intelligence.
The duo, belonging to Champaran in Bihar, were allegedly working on the directions of Anmol Bishnoi, the younger brother of the jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, who had claimed responsibility for the firing soon after the incident.
On Wednesday, police detained a third suspect from Haryana in connection with the case and are checking if he acted as an intermediary between the duo and Anmol Bishnoi.
Here’s what we know about the case so far:
🔴 Two men onboard a motorcycle fired five rounds outside actor Salman Khan’s Galaxy Apartment in Bandra early Sunday. One of the bullets landed on the balcony of the actor’s residence.
🔴 Soon after the incident, family members of the actor expressed their concerns over the security provided to the actor, given that four out of the five shots that were fired hit the building. Khan’s security had been upgraded to Y-plus in November 2022 from X category after threats were issued to him by gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.
🔴 The Bishnoi gang has in the past sent two threats to the actor who has been accused of killing a blackbuck in Rajasthan while shooting a movie in 1998. Blackbuck is considered sacred by the Bishnoi community which had filed a complaint against the actor soon after the incident.
🔴 While an FIR was registered at the Bandra Police station, the Mumbai Crime branch is investigating the matter.
🔴 With the help of human and technical intelligence, the Mumbai Police personnel, posing as devotees, arrested the duo on Monday from inside the Mata No Madh temple in Bhuj where they were hiding.
🔴 The two accused, identified as Vicky Gupta and Sagar Pal, left their bike near Mount Mary Church and headed to the Bandra railway station. They took a train from Santacruz and hired an autorickshaw to Mira Road. From Mira Road, they took a bus to Surat followed by a public transport to Bhuj.
🔴According to an officer, the police personnel tracked down the accused through their SIM cards, second-hand bike which they had dumped near Mount Mary church in Bandra after the firing, Aadhaar card details used to rent out a house in Panvel, where they had been staying for 21 days, and Pal’s unusual beard, which led the team to low-cost hotels, lodges, dharamshalas and temples.
🔴 While their mobile phones have been seized, technical analysis of the same is being carried out by the team, the officer told the reporters. Police are still looking for the firearm used by the accused and the mobile phones that were initially used by them.
🔴 On Wednesday, police detained a third suspect from Haryana in connection with the case and are checking if he acted as an intermediary between the duo and Anmol Bishnoi.
🔴 Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde Tuesday met the family of the actor and assured them of “complete safety.” During the meeting, he said, “We won’t tolerate any underworld gang activities in Maharashtra. Be it any Bishnoi gang or anyone else, we will uproot them.”
