A fire broke out on the premises of the busy Lokmanya Tilak Terminus railway station in Mumbai’s Tilak Nagar on Wednesday afternoon. No injuries were reported in the fire.

As per senior Central Railway officials, the fire broke out at 3.02 pm at the under-construction Pod Hotel, situated near the Jan Aahar Canteen on the first floor near platform number 1.

Speaking to The Indian Express, the railway’s chief public relations officer, Dr Shivraj Manaspure, said the blaze was reported near the Pod Hotel, which is an upcoming on the railway station’s premises, and the flames from there spread to the Jan Aahar canteen nearby.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the fire was confined to electric wiring, installations, wooden partitions, chairs, tables, doors and other objects in the canteen area sprawling over 2,000 to 2,500 sq ft in the ground-plus-one-storey station building.

Manaspure added, “We halted the train services for 10-15 minutes. However, the train services remained unaffected as we stopped operations only for a brief period and there was a lot of distance between the spot of the fire and the track services. The fire was controlled by 3.30 pm and no injuries have been reported.”

Soon after the outbreak of the fire, which was declared level II at 3.10 pm, several agencies including the Mumbai Fire Brigade, police, Railway Protection Force as well as ward and traffic staff were mobilised. The fire brigade pressed five fire engines, two fire trucks and five jumbo tankers into service. Meanwhile, the booking counter as well as the announcement centres were vacated.

According to the fire brigade, the fire was extinguished by 4.25 pm
