Eight people, including a senior citizen and three minors, sustained injuries in a fire incident that was reported in a residential building at Kandivali in the western suburbs of Mumbai Sunday.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) disaster management cell, the blaze erupted around 7.45 am and was extinguished within 30 minutes.

Civic authorities said all eight victims sustained injuries due to suffocation after they had inhaled smoke. The victims were trapped inside the building after the blaze erupted and had to be rescued by fire officials.

Officials said the blaze originated from a flat located on the second floor of the ground-plus-16-storey structure. The Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) officials said that the blaze initially broke out in the hall and later spread to other parts of the flat.

“The fire originated from the electrical wiring system and remained confined within the electrical installation. The presence of wooden furniture intensified the blaze, and the entire floor got filled with thick black smoke,” said a fire official.

The officials said all the injured are members of the same family who were staying inside the flat when the blaze broke out. They said that because of the smoke, the members could not immediately walk out and were trapped. Later, MFB officials reached the spot and rescued them one by one.

“The entire family with the children got trapped, and also the power system was cut, which created a visibility issue as well, since there was smoke present inside the building. The firemen had to rescue them from the staircases and take them out. Since the incident occurred only on the second floor, the operation became easier. Had it been on a higher floor, then things would have become much more challenging for us,” an official added.
