Police officers investigating the murders of two children whose bodies were found in Nariman Point have written to the Kalina Forensic Science Laboratory urging the authorities to ensure that the results of the chemical analysis tests of both victims are expedited. The police have asked for forensic reports of both Jagruti Patel of Cuffe Parade and Karishma Chavan of Colaba, who were three-and-a-half years and three years old respectively,to ascertain if there was any sexual abuse before the two were killed.
While the police had written to expedite the process for Jagrutis forensic results much earlier, the request to expedite the forensic results report for Karishma is believed to have been sent last week.
Both Jagruti and Karishma were found dead in a secluded spot next to the Nariman Point Fire Brigade Depot. While Jagrutis body was found on November 13 last year,Karishma was found murdered in the same spot on January 18. Both victims had been abducted. Officers investigating the two murders said as the post-mortem reports of both victims did not show any proof of sexual assault, the forensic results were being awaited. Investigators feel that if there is proof of sexual assault in the cases, they will be able to try and pinpoint the character of the murderer.
The letter was sent last week and we have urged the FSL authorities to ensure that they expedite the process ordered on Karishmas viscera samples so that the results of the forensic tests can reach us soon. We have told the authorities that the forensic results are an important part of our investigation and that we need it at the earliest, said an officer who is part of the investigation team. Jagrutis body was found in a highly decomposed state and post-mortem reports had not revealed much.
Before Karishmas body was found,we had sent a letter to the FSL requesting them to give us the forensic results of Jagrutis viscera samples soon. We have sent many reminders after that but are yet to receive the reports. We are hoping to get the results of both Karishma and Jagrutis viscera samples soon, the officer said.
The officer said the test results would help in determining if there was any sexual assault on either victims. As the police are probing the possibility of the same person being involved in both murders, the officer said that if the forensic results pointed at sexual abuse, they could be certain that the same killer may be involved.
When local residents had discovered Jagrutis body in November last year, they had found her body hidden by vegetation. However, when officers visited the spot, they saw that Jagrutis innerwear was placed next to the body. On January 18,when officers found Karishmas body, her innerwear was also next to the body. Our investigations are on, the officer said.
