Under pressure to investigate and prevent sexual harassment cases in the area after the murders of Keenan Santos and Reuben Fernandez in Amboli last month, the D N Nagar polices time and resources are now also being spent in chasing a cat-killer,as animal activists in the area are up in arms over cat deaths.
Besides preparing a special squad to patrol the streets to protect women from molesters, the D N Nagar police have also formed a team to find a man who has reportedly been seen killing cats in the area, after animal activist Aban Mistry filed a complaint on Monday.
Mistry, who works at a bank, said in his complaint he had received a call from Kapaswadi in Versova a week ago from a local claiming he had seen a resident identified as Swami and his accomplice catching a cat in a gunny bag.
The men took the cat to a drain and tried to drown it. When it did not die, they smashed its head with a stone. They then cut the head off and took the body to Swamis house, claimed Mistry, who has been working towards getting stray animals vaccinated.
We dont know what they did with the cat. However,we suspect that they must have either eaten its meat or sacrificed it for some ritual, alleged Mistry.
There have been instances of cats being killed for meat in areas such as Kalina and Versova, said Mistry. The locals say they have seen people roaming with gunny bags to catch cats, he added.
The police detained Swami. However,he denied the allegations and said a man staying in Nehru Nagar had been killing cats in the locality.
Witnesses in the area saw Swami with an accomplice who may have killed the cat. We had detained Swami. However,we let him off on the condition that he would help us nab the cat killer, said assistant police inspector Sadashiv Sawant, who is investigating the case.
