Opposition Nationalist Congress Party’s MP Supriya Sule and NCP MP from ruling Ajit Pawar camp Sunil Tatkare have written separately to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla seeking to expedite the disqualification proceedings against each other.
“I had filed a Disqualification Petition on 4 July, 2023 seeking the disqualification of Sunil Tatkare under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution of India. It’s been 4 months with no action taken. The delinquent MP’s actions are a blatant attack on the Tenth Schedule & the Hon’ble Supreme Court has directed timely resolution of such petitions to uphold the Constitution & democratic principles in true spirit. I request no further delay in adjudicating the petition please,” NCP MP Supriya Sule said in a statement.
She has written a new letter dated November 3, reminding seeking no further delay from Speaker Om Birla.
“As your records would reveal, I have filed a Disqualification Petition on 05.07.2023 under Rule 6 of the Members of Lok Sabha (Disqualification on ground of Defection) Rules, 1985, seeking disqualification of Sunil Tatkare under Para 2 (1)(a) of Tenth Schedule of the Constitution of India,” she wrote in the letter.
The letter said that ‘it has been 4 months since the said filing but no action has been taken by your office either to issue notice on the delinquent MP or to call for an oral hearing in the matter.’
She wrote that the actions of the delinquent MP in joining hands with the BJP government constitute a brazen attack on the Tenth Schedule. “The Tenth Schedule has placed in you great trust to ensure that the sanctity of the Tenth Schedule is maintained and any violation thereof is dealt with by an iron hand,” it further added.
Meanwhile, Tatkare claimed to have filed a similar petition against Sule and two others calling for Speaker to take action against them.
“We as the (Nationalist Congress Party) too have filed the disqualification petitions against Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs and we also demand that a decision should be taken at the earliest. We have taken the decision in democratic and constitutional manner,” Tatkare said, adding that he too believes in democracy and wants Birla to take action at the earliest.
Tatkare added that he has also filed a disqualification petition against Sule, Satara Lok Sabha MP Shrinivas Patil and Lakshadweep LS MP Mohammad Fazal as well as Rajya Sabha MP Fauzia Khan and Vandana Chavan. “Another Lok Sabha MP Amol Kolhe was with us when the swearing-in ceremony took place. We believe that he is with us and therefore we have not filed disqualification petition against him,” he said.
On July 2, a group within the NCP led by Ajit Pawar rebelled against his uncle and NCP chief Sharad Pawar to join hands with the BJP, staking claim on the party name and symbol. Two groups are presently fighting out the matter in front of the Election Commission. In addition, disqualification petitions have been filed by both sides against elected representatives of either side.
Commenting on Sule’s statement that certain invisible power is protecting Ajit Pawar camp, Tatkare said that such statements are nothing but out of frustration since majority of MLAs are with us. “Our decision is based on legal, democratic and constitutional values where majority of MLAs stand with us. It is natural for anyone to feel frustrated over this. Such statements come out of such frustrated mindset,” he said.
Tatkare also announced a state-wide tour starting from November 8 in east Vidarbha till November 8. He added that the other regions will be covered in coming days. “We will be presenting the position we have taken under the leadership of Ajit Pawar before the people during this tour,” he said. The tour will have the tagline, ‘Nirdhar Nav Parvacha: Ghadyal Tech, Vel Navi’ (Determination for New Era: Unchanged clock, with new time).
