Mumbai police constable Vishal Ramesh Pawar, who was allegedly assaulted and robbed by a group of robbers and drug addicts on April 27, was lying uncouscious near the railway tracks for five hours near Matunga railway station and but did not get any help, said police on Thursday.
According to the police, when Pawar was alive and undergoing treatment at the Thane Civil Hospital, Kopar police recorded his statement. On Pawar’s complaint, police registered a case under sections 392 (robbery), 394 (hurting while robbing), 328 (causing harm by administering poisonous substances) of the IPC.
On Wednesday, the case was transferred to Dadar Government Railway Police. On Thursday, police added Section 302 (murder) of the IPC in the FIR after Pawar died at the hospital while undergoing treatment. “Police have also formed nearly a dozen teams to catch the culprits. We are confident that we will soon crack the case,” said Manoj Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central Railway.
According to Pawar’s statement to the police, he was coming to Mumbai for guard duty of Jameel Khatlam in Byculla on Saturday night. When the train slowed down between Sion and Matunga stations, a person standing near the tracks hit Pawar on the hand and his phone fell down.
Since the person picked up the phone and started fleeing, Pawar got off the train and chased him. After covering some distance, he came across the person along with three to four drug addicts. While one person allegedly injected some poisonous substance from behind onto his back, another person poured a red color liquid from a bottle into his mouth. They fled the scene after robbing his phone and some cash.
According to his statement to the police, Pawar felt dizzy, lost consciousness, and was lying there unattended for a long time. He regained consciousness after four to five hours and went to Matunga railway station. He waited at the station for the local train service to start and boarded a train for Thane to go home.
After reaching home Pawar suffered severe headache and vomited multiple times overnight. His brother Nilesh took him to the Thane Civil hospital on Monday. Suspecting his symptoms to be of heatstroke, doctors admitted him to the heatstroke ward, where he died while undergoing treatment on Wednesday.
