The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) which is constructing the Gopal Krishna Gokhale Bridge in Andheri has finished the concretisation of the roads and is set to open the bridge for vehicular movement by end of February.

The concretisation of this bridge began last week and it was completed on January 28. Civic officials said that the concrete now requires time to be cured.

“The curing period of concrete is likely to take three weeks, this process will harden the surface of the bridge and make it convenient for vehicular movement. After the curing is completed, ancillary works like painting the signages and setting lights will be taken up, soon after which the bridge will be opened for vehicular movement,” said a senior official.

Initially, only one side of this bridge will be opened for vehicular movement. This bridge will have two vehicular lanes that will cater to both east and west bound motorists.

Civic officials said that the bridge will be open to vehicular movement by February 26.

The process of launching the first open-web-girder (OWG) of this bridge was initiated on December 3.

The length of the Gokhale ROB is 90 metre, making it the second-longest railway overbridge (ROB) in Mumbai after the Vidyavihar ROB in the eastern suburbs (99.8 metre). The weight of the OWG is around 1,300 metric tonnes (MT). The Gokhale bridge before being pulled down, measured 77 metres.
