The BMC is planning to install nets in the outfall of all the major and minor drains across the city to prevent solid waste from entering the nullahs and clogging them.
On Saturday, a delegation of senior civic officials visited the eastern suburbs of the city to check the progress of desilting works. However, they found that even after removing silt from the drains, they are still getting filled with solid waste, such as plastic and thermocol.
P. Velrasu, additional municipal chief (projects),who visited the spots, said, “We are exploring the idea of setting up nets on the drain outfalls to prevent solid waste from going into the water.”
“We have seen that throwing plastic into the drain is a regular practice in areas having informal settlements. There needs to be better management of these waste and this problem can be eliminated only by the concerted efforts of both citizens and the BMC,” he said.
