Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP) Maharashtra unit chief and Lok Sabha MP Sunil Tatkare said he was to travel to his native area of Sutarwadi in Raigad district on Wednesday morning in the ill-fated helicopter that crashed, killing three crew members onboard. He also expresssed his condolences for the the three deceased persons.
“The helicopter was booked by the party for travelling till the time the elections completed. We had gone to Parli the day before to participate in the the party’s Jan Sanman Yatra,” said Tatkare.
With Amit Shah in Mumbai, both Tatkare and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar travelled to Mumbai from Beed on Tuesday night to meet the Union Home Minister as discussions over seat-sharing in the ruling Mahayuti were to be concluded soon. The Helicopter had been stationed at Pune for a night.
“We came to Mumbai and the helicopter was in Pune. It was to come here (Mumbai) and take me to Sutarwadi,” he said.
Tatkare said he had a number of programmes scheduled at his native place on Wednesday and once they were completed, he was to return to Mumbai. “I am traveling by road. It was extremely unfortunate to learn about the the news of the deaths of the three people. It is heartbreaking and my condolences stand with the families of these individuals,” he said. He added that i wasn’t appropriate at the time to speak about his own well-being.
According to sources within the party, the crashed helicopter had been deputed on duty for Tatkare for over a month now. “The company had given us the helicopter. We do not want to indulge in blame games here as the company has lost three of its employees,” a senior party leader said.
