The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation on Wednesday announced that there will be four consecutive days of high tide in the Arabian Sea between December 4 and 7, during which the civic body’s disaster cell has urged people not to visit Mumbai’s coastline.
In a bulletin shared by the authorities, it has been mentioned that the tide levels will remain above 4 metres between December 4 and 7. Further, the civic body has also maintained that the tide levels may cross 5 metres on December 6.
According to the BMC’s bulletin on Thursday night, the tide levels will reach 4.96 metres on Thursday night, later on Friday morning the tide levels will reach 4.14 metres. On Saturday morning, the tide levels will touch 5.03 metres–which is the maximum in the four-day period. Later Saturday night, the tide levels are set to be around 4.17 metres. On Sunday early morning, the tide levels will be around 5.01 metres, while in the afternoon, the levels will be around 1.10 pm.
Civic officials have urged citizens to refrain from visiting the beaches during this four-day period. The civic officials also maintained that they will be deploying more lifeguards in the beaches as a preventive measure against disasters.
Mumbai has a total shoreline length of 145 km and there are 12 beaches that are open to the public. These beaches are spread between the island city, eastern and western suburbs.
Usually, a large number of citizens and tourists visit the city’s beaches during the weekends.
“For every 100 metres, we will have one lifeguard stationed,” the official said.
