State Minister Ashish Shelar on Thursday said that for the upcoming elections to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the BJP will not be in alliance in the NCP under the leadership of Nawab Malik, who is accused in a money laundering case linked to gangster Dawood Ibrahim’s gang members.
“We have been opposing Nawab Malik who faces serious charges related to money laundering and underworld links with Haseena Parker. Our opposition is not against any individual or NCP. But Malik is facing serious charges which cannot be endorsed by the BJP,” Shelar said.
A BJP sources said that the fight in BMC is against the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) which is likely to have an alliance with MNS led by Raj Thackeray.
Malik was appoined as the incharge of the local body polls in Mumbai by the NCP led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.
An NCP leader said, “Our party president Ajit Pawar will still look into the matter. He will decide on whether the party should continue with Malik or replace to facilitate alliance with BJP in Mumbai.”
Underplaying BJP’s opposition, the NCP leader said, “They have their own reasons to decide on pre-poll partners for the elections. But we have to also consider our own organisational issues.”
NCP sources also alleged that BJP’s decision was also part of their strategy to trigger “polarisation” among Hindu and Muslim voters.
On November 18, a special court in Mumbai framed charges against Malik and two firms linked with his family in the money-laundering case filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in 2022.
The ED had alleged that a land in Goawala compound in Kurla belonging to two women were usurped by Hasina Parkar, the sister of Dawood Ibrahim. The ED claimed that the power of attorney for the land was forged and it was transferred without any authorisation, and subsequently bought by the firm Solidus, linked to Malik.
