A Bhojpuri actress was held on Friday for allegedly pushing women into prostitution.
Identified as Suman Kumari, 24, the actress was held after a raid by the Mumbai Police’s Social Service Branch on Friday evening.
An officer said they received information about a prostitution racket operating from Royal Palm Hotel in Goregaon where “models were being supplied for prostitution”. A team conducted a raid at the hotel.
Police rescued the three women and detained Suman Kumari. “Kumari would supply models to people. These women who had come to the city to make a career in films had fallen on hard times and were in need of money to maintain their lifestyle,” an officer said. Kumari has acted in Bhojpuri films like ‘Laila Majnu’ and ‘Baap Numbari, Beta Dus Numbari’. She has also featured in songs in various languages including Hindi, Punjabi and Bhojpuri, the officer added.
An FIR has been filed under sections of the Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act (PITA). She would be placed under arrest, officials said. Cops are on a lookout for another accused – a man, who was allegedly the link between Kumari and the clients.
