A day after the building collapse in Bhiwandi, the Narpoli police Sunday registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against the developer. Meanwhile, officials revealed that five people were killed in the mishap while ten others were rescued from the debris.
A senior police officer confirmed that the developer, identified as Indrajit Patil, had been detained, and further investigation was underway.
The three-storey building in the Bhiwandi area of Maharashtra’s Thane district collapsed Saturday afternoon, trapping several people under the debris.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Navnath Davle (Zone II) said, “A case was registered against the developers and others involved. We have learnt that some parts of the building were illegally constructed. We shall write to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and understand from it because it is the planning authority.”
The police said they would also approach officials from the local gram panchayat and ascertain whether permission was granted to construct the building. The building was constructed in 2014 above a godown, said an officer.
The case was registered under Indian Penal Code sections 304 (2), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees).
