Five persons were booked by Daigar police in Thane for allegedly abusing, manhandling, robbing and forcing a 46-year-old auto rickshaw driver to say “Jai Shree Ram”.
According to police officials, the complainant was identified as Mohamed Sajid Mohamed Yasin Khan and the incident took place around 11pm on Thursday in Mumbra.
“He was in a rickshaw stand queue waiting for passengers when the five accused allegedly went and started beating him. They pushed him on the floor and after insulting him, they forced him to say Jai Shree Ram,” an officer said.
The police said the complainant later realised that the five accused had also stolen Rs 2,000 from his rickshaw. He then reported the matter at the police station and lodged a complaint.
A case was then registered under sections 395 (punishment for dacoity), 295 – A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) and 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) of the Indian Penal Code.
