The City Kotwali police on Monday added sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) against all accused in the murder case of chemist Umesh Kolhe. The case was later handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Police have applied sections 16 (punishment for terrorist act), 18 (punishment for conspiracy), and 20 (punishment for being member of terrorist gang or organisation) of the UAPA.

A senior police officer said, “UAPA has been applied as the murder was committed with an intent to terrorise people.”

After the case was transferred to the NIA, an FIR was registered by the central agency. A court also granted the NIA transit remand of all the accused till July 8. The NIA submitted the FIR to the special court, along with relevant documents of the case.

An official said a team of the NIA is in Amravati to take over case documents and complete the procedure to seek the transfer of the case to a court in Mumbai, which has jurisdiction to try cases filed by the NIA.
