Amidst orange alert, Mumbai experiences moderate downpour

While the IMD’s Santacruz observatory recorded 91 mm of rainfall on June 27, the coastal observatory situated in Colaba recorded 50 mm of showers until 5.30 pm on the same day.

According to a bulletin issued by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the highest rainfall was registered in the eastern suburbs at 24 mm, followed by the western suburbs, which received 22 mm of rainfall and the island city division which recorded 3 mm of downpour.

Meteorologists at IMD had issued the orange alert and attributed the incoming heavy showers to a combination of synoptic situations developing in Odisha, northeast Arabian Sea and the Gujarat coast.

“There is a low pressure in Odisha, which is expected to move towards Madhya Pradesh. Furthermore, there is an offshore trough, which is very strong. There is a cyclonic circulation in the northeast Arabian Sea and in the adjoining Gujarat coast. Because of these synoptic situations, the westerlies are supposed to gain intensity,” Sushma Nair, a scientist at IMD Mumbai told the Indian Express on Monday.

Meanwhile, temperatures continued to hover close to 30 degrees Celsius. While the Santacruz observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 30.8 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, the Colaba observatory noted a maximum temperature of 29 degrees Celsius.
