The Mumbai airport has posted a 13 per cent growth in cargo volumes for the April 2010 to March 2011 period. This after operations were hit by infrastructure bottlenecks and strikes. The airport handled 4.4 lakh metric tonnes of international cargo last year.
For April 2010-March 2011,the volume growth is 13 per cent over the same period last year at CSIA. The volume growth for MIAL as custodian is 32 per cent, said a Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) spokesperson.
At the airports air cargo complex, the success of MIAL in handling cargo has meant reduction in business for the other airport custodian Air India. When MIAL took over airport operations in 2006,Air India was handling 50 per cent of the airlines air cargo business. Now,MIAL is handling nearly 70 per cent of the total international frieght volumes.
Cargo agents said the airport has the potential to handle more cargo if bottlenecks are addressed. In October last year, cargo agents went on a flash strike to demand better working conditions.
Over the last six months, airport officials have been holding monthly meetings with cargo agents to resolve infrastructure bottlenecks. Not much has changed. No capacity or space has been added. The cold storage that MIAL promised is yet to be implemented, a cargo agent said.
The warehouse capacity, city side infrastructure for vehicle movement ,multi-location operations, are some of the bottlenecks,MIAL said. On long-term planning,we are restructuring the air cargo complex that would resolve the existing challenges and would also enhance handle capacity to one million tons per annum, said the MIAL spokesperson.
