Air India ‘B’ survived a strong challenge from Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) to eke out a narrow 2-1 victory in a keenly contested Senior Division match,of the Mumbai Hockey Association Ltd.

Air India ‘B’ survived a strong challenge from Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) to eke out a narrow 2-1 victory in a keenly contested Senior Division match,of the Mumbai Hockey Association Ltd. (MHAL) League – 2013,at the MHAL Stadium,Churchgate on Wednesday. The winners got both their goals in the first half.

The Air India outfit consisting of several Olympians and internationals in their ranks enjoyed a distinct edge over their opponents,who put up a dogged display to take the fight to the rival camp. The dominant Air India side did not take too much time to open the scoring as Ashish Gonsalves struck in the very fifth minute of the match. Ten minutes later,they doubled the lead when Port Trust conceded an own goal. Port Trust did not lose heart and fought on gamely but only found success late when Zubair Shaikh successfully converted a penalty corner in the 67th minute to reduce the margin.

Mumbai swimmer Ishaan Jaffer shines

Mumbai lad Ishaan Jaffer bagged six gold,including four individual medals,to emerge boys’ under-14 Group II individual champion,in the recently concluded 40th Junior National Aquatic Championship held at Hyderabad.

Ishaan,of Bombay Scottish,helped himself to the 200m,400m,1500m freestyle,400m medley gold and added the 4×100 freestyle and 4×100 medley relay gold. In addition,he won the 800m freestyle and 4×200 freestyle relay silver to complete a rewarding campaign.

Ishaan initiated his path to glory when he qualified for the junior nationals with five gold that included records in the 200m,400m,800m,1500m freestyle and 400m individual medley in the State Championships held from June 5 to 9 at Pune. “I can’t believe it,” said a delighted Ishaan soon after returning to Mumbai. “I’ve just arrived and it has yet to sink in. It was not easy though. I faced stiff competition.”

Ishaan,who is among the top juniors in the state and trains under coach Dhansukh Kagathra at the Otters Club,added: “It was an amazing experience and it has only inspired me to improve with the intention of representing my country at the international level. With sponsors hard to come by,that is another challenge. At the moment I am one of the fortunate few to have the support of (swim gear giants) Arena. But I am willing to make the sacrifices and give it my all.”

Goregaon SC romp to victory

Goregaon Sports Club ‘B’ produced a disciplined performance to down Pioneer Residency 2-0 in a Third Division match of the MDFA (Mumbai District Football Association) League 2012-13,at the St. Xavier’s ground,Parel on Wednesday afternoon. Kanisk Chatruvedi and Sagar Amre netted one goal each for the victors.

In another match of the same division,Silver Lining blanked Veer Engineering by a convincing 3-0 margin. Ajay Abrahim,Sanchez Carvalho and Vicky Pereir a scored one goal apiece to seal the win for their team.

Results: At St. Xavier’s ground,Parel – Third Div: Goregaon SC ‘B’ 2 (Kanisk Chatruvedi,Sagar Amre) beat Pioneer Residency 0; Silver Lining 3 (Ajay Abrahim,Sanchez Carvalho,Vicky Pereira) beat Veer Engineering 0.
