A three-year-old girl was killed after being run over by a Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus in Borivali on Monday.
The driver has been arrested by the Kasturba Marg police station under charges for causing death by negligence. The girl, Mehak Khatun Shaikh, is the daughter of a labourer who lives near Rajendra Nagar in Borivali.
According to police, the accident took place at Rajendra Nagar on Monday afternoon when the BEST bus of route A-301 was heading towards Magathane Depot from Borivali Station (East).
Mehek’s five-year-old brother was taking her to the other side of the road when the incident occurred. Her brother is safe, the police said.
“She came under the front wheels of the bus and sustained severe head injuries. She was rushed to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali, where she was declared dead,” said a BEST official.
According to the official, there was no conductor in the bus when the 48-year-old driver, Prakash Digambar Kamble, was operating it.
Kamble has been arrested under relevant sections of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) for causing death by negligence. It was a wet-lease BEST bus operated by the Daga Group. BEST officials are reviewing whether safety protocols were followed and if any lapses occurred in operating the bus without a conductor.
