10-yr-old girl jumps out of moving van, kidnapper held

The suspect, who managed to speed away even as passers-by rushed, was arrested by the police six hours later.

A 10-year-old girl foiled a kidnap bid Friday morning when she jumped out of the moving van that the kidnapper was driving her in. The suspect, who managed to speed away even as passers-by rushed, was arrested by the police six hours later.

Police said the girl was standing outside her residence around 7 am,waiting for the van hired by her parents to take her to school when the suspect, later identified as Raju Mehboob Khan, pulled over a red Maruti Omni.

Khan allegedly asked the girl to get in,saying he would drop her to school. When she said she was waiting for her van,Khan told her he had come in place of the regular driver. The girl got into the van and sat beside Khan. She,however, grew suspicious when Khan started driving in a direction opposite to her school. When Khan allegedly touched her thigh in an inappropriate manner, the girl opened the door and jumped out of the van. Since she landed on her back, she was saved from major injuries, police said.

Eyewitnesses rushed to her help. Some noted the licence plate number of the van,and immediately conveyed it to the police control room. Police officer said the car was later found in RCF area.

Assistant Police Inspector Hemant Bhavdhankar said,“We found a visiting card in the car, which had the name and an address of a woman in Dongri. We visited her and she told us she owned the Omni in question and that her driver took care of it for her….”

Acting on police instructions, the woman called Khan to her residence. When Khan reached her residence,he was arrested.
