The Punjab Petrol Pump Dealers’ Association has demanded reduction in value added tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel in Punjab as the border area petrol pumps are suffering huge losses.
Ashok Jain, general secretary of the association, said that while VAT in Punjab was 31%, it was only 20.5% in Haryana, 22% in Chandigarh and 24% in Himachal Pradesh. Due to high taxes, petrol was costlier by about Rs 7 a litre in Punjab. Sukhminder Pal Singh Grewal, chief patron of the association, urged the government to reduce VAT.
