PAU golden jubilee celebrations kick off,former V-Cs honoured

A host of former vice-chancellors of the institute were honoured as the Punjab Agricultural University kick started its Golden Jubilee Celebrations on Monday with a colourful inaugural function.

A host of former vice-chancellors of the institute were honoured as the Punjab Agricultural University kick started its Golden Jubilee Celebrations on Monday with a colourful inaugural function. Among the former VCs who were recognised included Dr S S Johl,Dr K S Gill,Dr A S Khehra,Dr G S Kalkat and Dr K S Aulakh.

Dr Kalkat,who currently serves as the Chairman of the Punjab State Farmers’ Commission,released the Golden Jubilee Logo,conveying the message of ‘50 Years of Glory and Pride.’ The former vice-chancellors released seven PAU publications even as they paid glowing tributes to their deceased counterparts: Dr P N Thapar,Dr M S Randhawa,Dr A S Cheema and Dr Sukhdev Singh.

Addressing the gathering,Dr Johl stated that PAU was the best university in the country and the team spirit of the varsity’s scientists paved way for the Green Revolution. He added that the immense contributions of scientists like D S Athwal,J S Kanwar,A S Atwal and G S Sidhu cannot be forgotten for having put the university on a sound footing in its formative years. Johl called upon scientists and academicians to lay special thrust on organic farming and information and communication technology .

Dr Khehra remarked that no organisation can succeed without competent human resources. The NRI alumni can support PAU programmes,for which efforts need to be made,he added.

Terming PAU as a prestigious and an eminent institution,Dr Aulakh said that although science and technology was undergoing drastic changes,yet PAU scientists were contributing in an excellent manner. He,however,said that adequate government support was required for PAU to sustain its tempo in research and development.

Earlier,PAU Vice-Chancellor Dr Dhillon welcomed the dignitaries. Highlighting PAU’s contribution in ushering in the Green Revolution,he said that with the guidance and advice of his predecessors and scientists,the University has nurtured and scaled great heights over the past 50 years.

Dr Dhillon added that PAU has produced many stalwarts who have been recipients of coveted awards like the World Food Prize,Padma Awards,among others.

He also lauded the state government support for promoting excellence at the PAU.
