NCP asks state govt to notify rent control Act

A meeting of the state Executive Committee of the Nationalist Congress Party was held here under Swaran Singh.

A meeting of the state Executive Committee of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) was held here under Swaran Singh. The members have urged the SAD-BJP government to notify the Punjab Rent Control Act 1995 as soon as possible.

The act is lying in the government files due to lack of political will power of the SAD -BJP government and earlier the Congress government led by Capt Amarinder Singh too failed to implement it. The state is unable to get the funds under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) due to non-implementation of the Punjab Rent Control Act.

The implementation of the act is a mandatory condition for the states to get funds under the schemes related to JNNURM,said Amrit Pal Sidhu Brar, spokesperson of NCP in Punjab.

The NCP committee supported the case put forward by the state government for a relief package of Rs 5112.09 crore to bail out Punjab farmers who are facing drought-like conditions here. The package is meant to compensate the farmers and the state for their extraordinary efforts and sacrifices during the ongoing crisis.

The package demanded by the state government includes Rs 2,531 crore for purchase and arrangement of additional power,Rs 850.80 crore to compensate for additional cost incurred by the farmers on of high speed diesel,Rs 893.49 for conversion/ rescheduling of cooperative credit,Rs 300 crore on account of additional ground water Irrigation,Rs. 300 crore for restoration of capacity and installation of alternative tubewells,Rs 211.60 crore for arrangement of feed and fodder for livestock sector, and Rs 26 crore for drinking water supply.
