The illegal sale of sand today cost 22-year-old Jagu his life after he was electrocuted by low-tension wire at Haibowal Chowk on Tuesday afternoon. Jagu was standing atop a trolley loaded with sand and came in close contact with a the high-tension wire. He fell on the road and died on the spot.

A resident of Partapsingh wala village, the deceased had brought sand illegally from the Noorpur Bet area. Though the High Court has banned the mining of sand and has only allowed government to conduct auction of sand mines for 6 months, illegal mining continues unabated in the area.

One trolley, hence, costs around Rs 8,000 against Rs 2,000 in May when ban was not applicable.

Like many other,Jagu too was making quick buck by selling illegal sand in the open market.

Meanwhile,Gurvinder Singh, incharge Haibowal police station, said it was a mishap so no inquiry would be conducted.

District Mining Officer Visvbandhu said,“We impose fines but violaters find their ways and means. So far,we have imposed penalities worth Rs 1.65 lakh on trolley owners.”

Interestingly, violaters can only be fined Rs 5,000 if they are found carrying sand despite ban but the contraband cannot be sequested.
