The Punjab State Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu notice of the case of suicide by a resident of Deharka village on Wednesday. In his suicide note,Gurcharan Singh had written that he was taking the extreme step because of his poor financial condition and harassment by two police officers who demanded bribe from him.

The next date for hearing in the case has been set for June 28. The Ludhiana Rural police have also initiated an inquiry against the two officers.

SSP H S Chahal said,“ It is sad that a person had to go through such mental trauma. I have ordered an inquiry against the officers who have been accused of demanded bribe.”

Gurcharan had married off one of his five daughters to one Harjit Singh of Jassowal Sudan in 2006. In 2008,her in-laws started beating her up and demanded more dowry. The issue was resolved by the village panchayat but her in-laws did not follow the orders of the panchayat. Gurcharan’s son Dilpreet Singh lodged a fresh complaint against his sister’s in-laws in May this year.

Meanwhile,Gurcharan, who worked at a sugarmill, had not received his salary for 25 months. Adding to his woes,he was asked for a bribe of Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000 by an ASI and a head constable, respectively.

On Wednesday,Gurcharan left his house to meet his sister in Malak village. There he consumed some poisonous substance which led to his death. Before that he called up his friend Buta Singh and told him where to find his suicide note. In his note,he alleged that the two police officers had called him to the women’s cell and forced him to sign some blank papers after he failed to pay the bribe. He feared that the police would now give a report in favour of his daughter’s in-laws.
