The Managing Director of Citizens Watches India Private limited,Katsusuke Tokura, said that industry in Japan — which had suffered heavily after the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear power plant failure — is finally recovering.

Speaking about his company on a visit to the city,he said: “Luckily, our factory was 80 km away from the site of the tsunami,so the damage was minimal. There was a 15-day power failure in the area, due to which, production suffered, but after that things went back on track. Production has not been hit at all in our factory. Infact,we have grown by 20 per cent in the last financial year.”

On Wednesday, the company expanded its sales network by opening an exclusive boutique at Ghumar Mandi in Ludhiana in alliance with Packard’s — a leading watch retail group in Punjab,Haryana and Chandigarh.

The company,in alliance with Packard’s,already has two showrooms in Chandigarh and plans to increase its retail network in view of the growing demand for Citizen Watches. The store in Ludhiana will cater to the customers of the industrial town and adjoining cities, towns and villages.

Tokura, who been staying in India for the last one year, was not in Japan when earthquake struck. “I went to Tokyo recently and the city is almost the same. The pace is a little slow but that is expected after such a tragedy. Car manufacturing industry and many other sectors are still recovering,” he said.

The company had hiked prices of all brands of watches by 10-15 per cent. It maintained that is was an usual annual hike and had nothing to do with the tragedy in Japan.
